Although broadband might be the norm all over the world, there are still some small towns and villages that were still being served by 56 kbps dial-up connections and are just changing over to broadband. The awesome speed offered by these high speed connections might look awesome when compared to their dial-up telephone cousins, but are you getting the proper connection speed as mentioned by your internet service provider? Before you shoot off a complaint email to your broadband internet service provider, you should check to make sure you are using the right broadband settings required for your high speed connection to the net.
Some small tweaks are all that is required to increase the speed you are now experiencing by leaps and bounds. Before going ahead and making any changes, you should first check out whether you are actually receiving less speed than what has been specified by your internet service provider. There are a number of sites on the net that will help you to determine this. Just do a Google search on “check my internet speed”.
They check your speed by downloading small packets of data from their server to your PC for checking the download speed of your broadband speed connection. The same packets of data are then uploaded back to the remote server to check your internet connection’s upload speed. Once the tests are done and over with, you are shown the results on your computer screen. If they are close to what has been promised by your internet service provider, there is no need to make any alterations.
However, if the speed is much less, then it is high time that you checked your broadband settings. You should not forget that for the best internet performance you should use correct broadband settings. The details about such settings are generally provided by your internet service provider.
There are basically two different types of broadband connections. One of them consists of a connection that is provided to you directly by your ISP. If there is a router or router/ modem combo (a small box, that sits between your PC and the connection cable provided by your internet service provider. The second one consists of a cable that is directly connected to the ethernet card of your PC with the router lying at the provider’s net. These type of connections are provided by the same people who also provide cable connections for your TV and you should call them up to resolve the speed problems.
