You should set up broadband properly to experience the best surfing and downloading from the net. Most people are of the belief that their internet service providers will undertake all the settings on their behalf. This might be true to a certain extent, especially if the broadband connection is provided by the same organization that also provides cable TV connection in their areas. In such a case, the modem and the router all lies at the cable TV service provider’s end and they tweak the settings from their end.

However, there are a few settings that also need to be done on the PC of the subscriber, and the technician of the local service provider takes care of that. It is easy to distinguish such a connection by checking out the cable that connects the PC to the internet.  If the cable is directly connected with the Ethernet card of the PC, then the internet connection is being provided by the local cable TV fellows.  However, if someone has subscribed for a broadband connection to the net, the connection goes through a small box (modem) before being connected to the Ethernet card or to the USB (universal serial bus) port.

In such situations, one has to manually set up broadband connection. There is no reason to be alarmed at the prospect of doing so, because it requires no hardware knowledge. First connect the thin cable (similar to that of the landline cable) to its appropriate spot on the modem.

Now connect the modem to the PC using the patch cord supplied by the provider. Both these operations require hardly any effort at all. Turn on the PC and the modem and see if all the WAN (wide area network) light along with the `power’ light on the modem are glowing or not. If they are not, then you need to check out whether the power cord from the modem to your room’s power outlet is connected properly or not.

If the power light is glowing but the WAN light is not, you need to contact your internet service provider for help. However, if the above mentioned lights are glowing properly, then the remainder of the task is quite easy. Right click on `my network place’ and then on properties to select `make new connection.’ And follow the `Windows’ wizard to complete the procedure.
